IMMIGRATION SOARS 20% IN A YEAR

Story Image

A total of 575,000 people moved to this country in 2010 with only 336,000 departing for overseas.

By Martyn Brown, Political Correspondent

THE number of foreigners coming into Britain surged by a massive 21 per cent last year, shattering the Government’s pledge to bring immigration down.
Official figures yesterday showed the number of immigrants soared to 239,000 – up from 198,000 in 2009.
A legacy of Labour’s open-door policy, it was the second highest annual figure since 1991. A total of 575,000 people moved to this country in 2010 - the equivalent of one every minute - with only 336,000 departing for overseas.
The Office for National Statistics also said that the number of people granted settlement –the first step to full citizenship – in the UK also reached a record 241,000 last year. A total of 195,000 were granted British citizenship, down from the record high of 204,000 in 2009, but more than double the level of a decade ago.
The number of people applying for asylum also fell last year but has started to rise again, with 4,800 applications between April and June, mainly from Pakistan and war-torn Libya.
ì
This gives a lie to all those silky promises made by David Cameron at the General Election.

Gerard Batten, Ukip’s home affairs spokesman
The majority of immigrants arriving in Britain – 300,000 – were from outside the EU. But net migration – the difference between those arriving and leaving – from eastern European countries rocketed to 39,000.
Britain’s total Polish population is now to 532,000, which is the same as the fifth largest city in Poland, Poznan.
Campaigners last night warned the Government will struggle to fulfil its pledge to slash net migration to tens of thousands by 2015.
Sir Andrew Green, chairman of the campaign group Migration Watch UK, said: “These figures lay bare the legacy of the Labour government. The Coalition will have to face down some vested interests if they are to get anywhere near their target.”

Gerard Batten, Ukip’s home affairs spokesman, accused the Government of “losing the plot”.
“The rise of 21 per cent tears a gaping hole in any pretence that this Government has the faintest idea of how to deal with runaway migration,” he said.
“This gives a lie to all those silky promises made by David Cameron at the General Election. They have lost the plot.”
But Immigration Minister Damian Green defended the figures, saying that the rise in net migration covered a period before the Government’s immigration reforms were brought in. “The figures stabilised in the last quarter,” he said. “The Government radically changed immigration policy, from our first months in office, to drive the numbers down with a limit on economic migration and changes to student visas.”
Study remained the most common reason for coming to the UK, with three in four of the 228,000 student immigrants from outside the EU.
Dr Carlos Vargas-Silva, a senior researcher at Oxford University’s Migration Observatory, said the rise in immigration from eastern Europe “raises the question of whether Government policies to cut net migration from outside the EU may be stimulating a demand for more EU workers”.
The figures came as an audit by MigrationWatch showed that Labour spent £2million every day on a shambolic asylum system.
The audit showed how up to £10billion was spent on processing applications as officials struggled to cope with a surge in numbers.
But only one in four of the 660,000 decisions made on asylum claims between 1997 and 2010 led to the applicant being removed.

TJ Hughes as gone with the loss of more jobs

Going back to a article i posted earlier here we have it TJ Hughes have closed and yet more jobs have gone and i feel sorry for the people that have lost there jobs whos to blame lets start with the conservative goverment going right down to councillor level and the labour party see all that labour party can do is create work schemes ( jet )what use is that we need to start making stuff like pottery steel bring coal up from these unused pits that are lying empty but until it registers in the brains of lab/cons/lib party that we need to start creating and making stuff and they give us a referendum and we stop bowing down to our EU dictators and stop immigration this will keep happening   ( heres the article )

As TJ Hughes closes, what's in store now for key site?

SHOPPERS picked up a bargain before a doomed city centre store closed its doors for the final time.
Items in the TJ Hughes store in Hanley were reduced by up to 90 per cent before the shop closed at noon yesterday.
And even some of the fixtures and fittings were up for grabs as the former Woolworths store was completely cleared.
The department store's closure has resulted in 43 staff losing their jobs.
The Liverpool-based discount chain collapsed in June and Ernst and Young was appointed as administrator.
The Hanley branch, – which opened in 2009 following a £1 million refit, is among 12 nationwide that have closed this month. About 30 of the firm's 57 outlets had already closed.
Now, calls are being made for a retailer to step in and take on the unit.
Richard Day, of the City Centre Partnership, said: "It's a large store and will create a void in the city centre. That was the problem when Woolworths closed.
"It's important that it is promoted and another tenant can be found as soon as possible.
"It is crucial to continue to address the public realm in the city centre as an attractive environment will help attract a new tenant."
North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce chief executive Bryan Carnes believes the emergence of the proposed East West Shopping Centre will further attract investors.
He said: "It's a key site and as such should be desirable for any retailer who wants to open a business in a busy shopping area. Hanley has a very high footfall.
"But we must realise the retail industry is not in a healthy state."
Stoke-on-Trent City Council has confirmed it will help market the property to new investors.
City renewal director Hardial Bhogal said: "We will be looking to promote the future use of the building in the city centre as we continue to look for ways to attract businesses to Stoke-on-Trent.
"We will also offer support to those staff who have been made redundant and work with the local job centres to help where we can."
Susan Thursfield, owner of Kerryhill Nurseries, runs a flower and plant stall opposite TJ Hughes three days a week.
Susan, from Bagnall, said: "The staff were all in fancy dress and it was quite busy as they have been knocking a further 10 per cent off the items every day.
"I hope somebody takes it on soon. I remember that when Woolworths closed it was really depressing to look at, especially during the winter nights."
Meanwhile, shoppers are hoping to see a new firm take on the vacant store.
Debbie Wallbank, from Stone, said: "I would like to see something like a H&M store or something like that.
"I wouldn't want to see an outlet that we already have elsewhere in the city centre.
"It's a big building and there is scope to have perhaps smaller units in there, along with a coffee shop or something like that."
Sandra Riley, from Tean, is sorry to see TJ Hughes close.
The 56-year-old said: "I would like to see something similar open in its place as it was useful having a shop which sold a variety of things."
Leah Booth, aged 24, from Packmoor, said: "I would like to see something like a Nando's or a Wagamama as it's something we need here."

THE number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Stoke-on-Trent has risen again after four consecutive monthly falls.
Latest Government figures reveal 7,756 residents were claiming Jobseeker's Allowance last month, up from 7,622 in June.
In Newcastle, the claimant count rose from 2,358 to 2,406, while in the Staffordshire Moorlands it was also up, from 1,088 to 1,157.
In South Cheshire, the number of people claiming JSA increased from 1,189 to 1,327, and the figure also rose slightly in Crewe and Nantwich, from 2,405 to 2,474.
The Office for National Statistics figures revealed that nationally, the total number of people claiming JSA showed its biggest monthly rise in more than two years, increasing by 3,100 to reach 1.56 million.
And overall unemployment, which includes those not eligible for JSA, underwent an unexpected rise.
Between April and June unemployment increased by 38,000 to 2.49 million.

More jobs gone in Stoke on Trent

as you can recall a few weeks ago i did a article concerning job loses in the department store TJ Hughes here it is its being in the local sentinel and now in a another paper from a different area now the labour council in stoke on Trent are bringing in jet courses in there mandate they say that this will help people find work its all going fail again like it did last time labour held the council and pervez just hasn't got a clue hes not in the slightest intrested in what happens in this city we seriously need to get our industry back pits/pots/steel the way forward would be to have a nationalist goverment we then could remove our self s from the EU ( European union ) closing borders so we don't take any more immigrants and foreign workers into this country backing the company's up by means of funding so they take on our young British lads and girls  aiding them with training so they could do the jobs these so called well trained foreigners supposable  can do there fore taking the pressure off our benefit system because in reality that's there for a means of a safety net in finishing labour who would vote labour  will  people never learn 163, billion debt i think that says it all

TJ Hughes workers get the chop

Thursday 18 August 2011
Hundreds of TJ Hughes employees were told today they face the chop with the discount department store planning to shut a further 12 stores in the next week.
Administrators revealed that a total of 585 staff will be made redundant from the stores in Belfast, Bootle, Corby, Coventry, Derby, Oldham, Plymouth, Redditch, Romford and Scunthorpe, which will close on Sunday.
A store in Hanley will also close next Wednesday and one in Warrington next Friday, bringing the total number of stores closed to 42 with 2,200 staff made redundant.
Six of the stores have been bought by Lewis's Home Retail Limited.
Staff will be made redundant two days after each store closes to the public, as has happened elsewhere.
Usdaw national officer John Gorle said: "These latest closures are bitterly disappointing but are now entirely predictable despite the claims of the administrators that they are still trying to find a buyer for the remaining stores.
"They appear to be operating to a pre-determined closure timetable, which they have decided to keep under wraps rather than be open and honest with staff and their trade union.
"Our members are understandably extremely angry at the way they are being treated. Loyal and hardworking staff are keeping stores open and running despite their precarious situation and as an absolute minimum they should be getting regular and accurate information from the administrators and proper notice and consultation before being made redundant."
He added that it was yet another example of the urgent need for the government to review liquidation and insolvency laws.

Labour Party lie again

The labour party made a election promise to keep a well used gym open(will field bentilee)In there election promise now they have closed it a high labour count in the council chambers as out voted a independent bench with 2 labour councillors voting against the closer.I think this is a trick to trick the general public into thinking labour actually cares about them i think not now lets get down to what's happening in my local area smallthorne now one of the problems around here is the fact that the younger generation as no where to play as they  have no parks in the local surrounding area now i intend to campaign on this now we have plenty of space around here to put 2 parks one at the top of smallthorne one at the bottom now the local councillor would probably say well we have ford green hall and the nature reserve ive being down there quite recently and its a mess over grown smelly i wouldn't let my little girl play around there plus both the residents association's are being run by the over 55 so the younger generation don't get to use them neither ive had this from another local resident to the area she turned around and said its not just the kids that are left aside its the under 55 now i always thought that residents association community nights  were for everyone not just for labour voters in this case i think not( nothing against elderly people) but the community centres are for all the residents not just one section of people   the next issue that is a rising issue is residents are doing there own repairs and a old gentleman as approached me and told me he as being painting some of is local pensioners bungle lows and he also told me about is fascia and sofit he said its that rotten he put is finger right through it now to me if you pay your council tax you are entitled to your repairs done now so much for labour supporting there local community and giving a honest and trustworthy representation the next 4 yrs are going be quite interesting  to say the least
